When is the best time to photograph a show?

Production photography is usually best done either during a dress rehearsal or during a specific press shoot where just certain scenes are performed purely for the purpose of getting production images.

Do you interupt the performance whilst taking the production pictures?

If it is a dress rehearsal then no I don’t interupt the performance at all.

If it is a photography run then yes I may well get the actors / dancers to stop and move to get the best pictures of a scene.

Can you photograph a live show?

Yes I can depending on what I am photographing.

Production pictures during a theatrical performances aren’t ideal. The audience are there to watch the performance not get distracted by a photographer so I (generally) wouldn’t be able to move around at all. Small intimate shows are usually fine to photograph live (depending on the venue). Bigger shows usually require me to move around when taking photos which is when a dress rehearsal is preferred.

Dance performances can be shot live but if you are looking for decent production photography for marketing then I recommend a specific run for photography.

Live music and live comedy are best to photograph live.
